Cremation and the Catholic Church

The Church has always emphasized the dignity of the human body. The human body is the Earthen Vessel of the Holy Spirit; therefore, the body is to be treated with Christian dignity.

During the Vatican II Council, it was recognized that cremation was no longer an anti-Christian statement. Cremation is accepted in the Church when the reasons for it are not contrary to Christian teaching.

Foremost the Church requires that human remains, full body or cremated remains, be treated at all times with dignity and respect. The Church teaches us that final remains should be placed in consecrated ground.

For more information concerning cremation and the Church contact your pastor.
